Font and Text Options: Font Properties

• Firefox 16px seems larger than in Safari and Opera (which are roughly equivalent)
• FIREFOX: If you set "default" font, then in the "Advanced" sub-menu the default "sans-serif". The two menus are linked. If you set, for instance "Times" as default, the sans-serif font will render to "Times" also, not a serif-font
• another way of phrasing the above comment, is that all browsers handle their preferences a little differently. As users program different settings, "generic" fonts can very significantly.
• The same font appears with different line-spacing (vertical) across browsers.
• Looking at the comments, Opera bullets are smaller than others
• Firefox horizontal spacing is a bit wider... either for letters or words... than the other browsers. Mostly this is noticeable as different line-wrap points in the sentence.

Happily, non-generic fonts render much more consistently across browsers, regardless of other user settings (aside from default size).

• None of the tested browsers rendered a font-size smaller than 9px, no matter how small I set the default browser font-size (tested 9px through 24px).
• On no browsers did the scale conform to the CSS1 (scale: 1.5) or the CSS2 (scale: 1.2) standards. With 16px medium, x-small rendered at 10px, not 11px
• Since I tried this with each of the generic font families, the differences in readability became very apparent.
• Safari appears to disable anti-aliasing around 10px fonts. This appears to be a browser function rather than an OS one (which has its own separate "turn off text smoothing for font sizes 'X' and smaller" function).
• Another sizing concern is a browsers Zoom function, which can take a 11px font and make it much smaller when zoomed out, but this does not affect the Pixy font-size reading

• These are very similar, the biggest difference appears to be than in small-caps, Opera renders apostrophes lower (at the level of the small text) whereas other browsers put it at the level of the top of the capital letters.
• In the past, I've felt like the difference in height between the small and regular caps varied between browsers... it seems like Safari's small-caps might be slightly smaller in relation to the regularly capitalized parts of a sentence than in FF/Opera/IE.

• FF sizing is again slightly different than other browsers, presumably because of the use of the fractional pixel font-sizes.
• For what it's worth, my ruler tells me that the fonts are rendering a little undersized on my desktop monitors.
• For equivalent font-sizes in absolute units... 1in = 72pt = 6pc = ~25mm = ~2.5cm
